VLC Media Player è un lettore multimediale portatile per vari formati audio e video (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) così come DVD, VCD e vari protocolli di streaming.
Esso può essere utilizzato anche come server per lo streaming in unicast o multicast in IPv4 o IPv6 su una elevata ampiezza di banda di rete.
Essa non ha bisogno di codec o un programma esterno al lavoro.
